Overview
Yala National Park is one of the finest wildlife experiences in Asia, renowned for having the highest concentration of leopards anywhere on Earth. Spread across 979 square kilometers of scrubland, lagoons, and coastline, the park offers encounters with elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and an incredible variety of birdlife.
The park is divided into five blocks, with Block 1 being the most visited and best for leopard sightings. Early morning and late afternoon game drives offer the best chances of spotting the park's elusive big cats, often lounging on rocky outcrops or walking boldly along the sandy tracks.
Beyond the wildlife, Yala's landscape is strikingly diverse — from dense monsoon forests to open grasslands, freshwater lakes to pristine Indian Ocean beaches. The ancient Sithulpawwa rock temple within the park boundaries adds a cultural dimension to the safari experience.
“Sri Lanka's premier wildlife sanctuary with the highest leopard density in the world, set across dramatic coastal scrubland.”
